The ICD had its origin in the World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children in Geneva, Switzerland in 1925. It is not clear as to why June 1 was chosen as the ICD.

Universal Children"s Day takes place on November 20 annually. First proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1954, it was established to encourage all countries to institute a day, firstly to promote mutual exchange and understanding among children and secondly to initiate action to benefit and promote the welfare of the world"s children. Universal Children"s Day is preceded by International Men"s Day on November 19 creating a 48 hour celebration of men and children respectively during which time the positive roles men play in children"s lives are recognized.

The World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland proclaimed June 1 to be International Children"s Day in1925. It is not clear as to why June 1 was chosen as the International Children"s Day: one theory has it that the Chinese consul-general in San Francisco (USA) gathered a number of Chinese orphans to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in 1925, which happened to be on June 1 that year.

The holiday is celebrated on 1 June each year. It is usually marked with speeches on children"s rights and wellbeing, children TV programs, parties, various actions involving or dedicated to children, families going out, etc.

在此以前，世界上的許多國家就有兒童節(jié)。1925年，國際兒童幸福促進(jìn)會(huì)倡議建立兒童紀(jì)念日，英國、美國、日本等國積極響應(yīng)，先后建立了自己國家的兒童節(jié)，英國規(guī)定每年的7月14日為兒童節(jié)，美國規(guī)定5月1日為兒童節(jié)。日本的兒童節(jié)很特殊，分男女兒童節(jié)，男兒童節(jié)5月5日、女兒童節(jié)3月3日。我國在1931年也曾經(jīng)規(guī)定4月4日為中國兒童節(jié)。

自從1949年確立6月1日為國際兒童節(jié)以后，世界各國紛紛廢除原來的兒童節(jié)，而統(tǒng)一為六一國際兒童節(jié)。我國中央政府1949年12月宣布：以六一國際兒童節(jié)代替原來的四四兒童節(jié)，并規(guī)定少年兒童放假一天。
